Butterfly Drawings - From the Beauty of Nature

butterfly drawings

Simple butterfly drawings of the common variety you can copy or even color in are all here. As spring is just around the corner along comes nature in all her glorious colors—a time when butterflies come to life and flutter around in a random way. We live high in the mountains where butterflies are fairly rare but we see plenty of them during the hot summer months—so get out with your pencil and paper!

Being in the mountains, these tough insects live off sap from the trees and also wild animal droppings if there is no nectar about. When they've had their feed you can take a snapshot of them to capture their colors to do a quick sketch later.

They are symmetrical in a way but all individually unique with their own magic markers from Mother Nature. In sketching these insects you only have to draw one half and then do a mirror image to get the full shape. My suggestion is to put a wash in first, just a loose one, then let it dry. Get out your pencil and draw half of the form in then copy it over mirror-image wise. You will find it quite easy after a while.

If you find it difficult to draw the other half you can always get a piece of tracing paper to get it looking great. Creating a line drawing may seem a bit complex to a beginner but all drawings can be broken down into simple shapes.

There is nothing complex about a butterfly's shape if you have a look at this first drawing. All butterfly forms are based on this simple shape—as it is with drawing anything really.
