Teaching Kids Sports Skills

teaching kids social skills

Teaching kids social skills is something that is sadly lacking in today's society. Some people would argue that children lack discipline and manners because parents are much more complacent.

Parents who don't encourage social skills are not teaching kids to be functioning adults in society. I'm sure some of the anti-socialists who commit crimes will tell you that teaching kids social skills is important to keep them from going down the wrong path and it was something they were lacking.

Teaching kids social skills is a daily process and way of life. As an adult, social skills can make the difference in promotions at work, learning in college and having friends that support you through the tough times. Manners and politeness are just part of teaching kids social skills.

They need to learn to get along well with others through sharing, communication, and respect for other people, including adults. This is taught throughout their growing years and parents are responsible for teaching kids these behaviors.

Have you ever been in the store and seen a child throw a tantrum, slap at their parent, refuse to obey and the parent just lets it go and moves on down the aisle while the child gets more agitated? Some parents think they are controlling the child's actions by ignoring them rather than talking to them and making them mind.

When they are an adult, their boss might ask them to do a particular task. How long do you think they will be employed with this kind of behavior every time they don't get their own way? How many friends do you think they will have and how long will they enjoy a healthy marriage?

You might not realize the consequences that occur in adult life when you neglect teaching kids social skills. It affects all areas of their adult life, including marriage, employment, social network and fitting into society as a productive person.

It is easy to see what lack of discipline has done to children that have grown up in the "no spanking" era. The problem is that most parents took "no spanking" to mean "no discipline", which is quite different. Teaching kids social skills involves discipline and teaching kids what is the acceptable and expected behavior in adult society.

Some of this can be attributed to laziness on the part of the parents, or a lifestyle that is too busy to allow the extra few minutes for teaching kids social skills they will need to survive as a happy adult. While schools are teaching kids social skills in a school setting, the child needs to realize these behaviors are expected at home, in the store and when visiting friends and relatives.

It is sometimes discounted to a hyperactive child, but when you think back to your childhood days, chances are you didn't see the kind of disrespectful behavior out of such a large number of children, like you do now.

For parents that care enough to save for their child's college education, it is equally important that you realize teaching kids social skills is a necessary part of their success. Children still need discipline, need to learn to be respectful and polite. Teaching kids social skills is an investment in their success as an adult.
